Resume and Interview Workshop with Keith Cline

In November, the Boston Women in Product (BWP) hosted an event with the support of Keith Cline. The event focused on resume writing and interview preparation specific to the Product Management function.Keith has spent the last 15 years helping grow Boston’s vibrant technology and startup communities. In 2002, Keith founded Dissero, a recruiting firm focused on early to mid-stage venture-backed technology companies. Keith later founded VentureFizz in 2009 to tell the stories of Boston’s successful leaders and fast-growing organizations, and help people make connections through the VentureFizz Job Board.Keith focused on the roughly 30 seconds that a hiring manager spends looking over a resume to understand what the candidate is doing now and what a logical next step might look like. The group acknowledged that while every hiring manager is different, it’s important to highlight what you’ve done that aligns with what the requirements are for position you’re looking to fill. Here are a few of the highlights from the event:
Having a summary on your resume is helpful
Networking is key to finding the right positionMake sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date
Domain experience is key – but not always required; there are ways you can network your way to get domain experience
Find a connection at the company you’re looking to join
Once you land the interview, make sure that you stay focused on the question that was asked; communication style and responses are important – in particular for a product manager
Be sure to show genuine interest in the company and/or the product
